BMW announced on Monday that the company is recalling about 1.3 million cars for repair worldwide due to a possible problem with a battery cable cover in the trunk. The battery cable cover may be incorrectly mounted, which can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, the vehicle can start on fire.

The recall affects 5- and 6-Series BMWs built between 2003 and 2010. If you own one of these vehicles, technicians at DJ Foreign Auto Care recommend taking your vehicle to the BMW dealer for the repair, which should take about 30 minutes to an hour and should be free of charge. To perform the repair, a BMW technician will inspect the connector, add protective grease to the area and the battery cable plastic cover will be replaced.

Many people do not realize that some Mercedes Benz models have two batteries. Recently the owner of a 2006 E350 came in with the battery light on. The DJ Foreign Auto Care technician checked both batteries to diagnose the problem. The main battery is located in the trunk, on the right hand side next to the spare tire compartment. The auxillary battery is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side. In this case the backup battery located in the front needed to be replaced. If you are the owner of one of these vehicles and you have a battery issue, make sure the technician tests both batteries because many times there may only be a problem with one battery and both do not need to be replaced.

Technicians at DJ Foreign Auto Care have recently worked on several BMW vehicles (2005 BMW X5, 2003 BMW 545i and other BMW models), where the valve seals were burnt out and the engine was burning oil. The owners of these vehicles were saying that they would change the oil when the oil change light came on, which was set at 15,000 miles from their last oil change.

The BMW manufacturer’s recommendation for the last several years has been every 10,000 - 15,000 miles for oil changes. There’s been a lot of controversy over this and whether synthetic oils can hold up for intervals of 15,000 miles in BMW engines. Some think that BMW increased their recommended oil change intervals to reduce free oil changes under the maintenance program and that they believe their engines will still outlive the warranty. Others point out that high performance engines and synthetic oils are made a lot better these days and that BMW is making engines that utilize oil more efficiently than in the past.

To be on the safe side, technicians at DJ Foreign Auto Care recommend not waiting until the end of the 10,000 - 15,000 mile range for oil change intervals to possibly prolong the life of your engine.

Technicians at DJ Foreign Auto Care found water under the dashboard and under the floor in the front. It turns out there is a class action lawsuit related to this specific problem (see link) where defects allow water to leak in through sunroof drains and/or the fresh air plenum, which causes damage to vehicle components and the interior.
